A.Word.A.Day
Just thought I’d put my recommendation for Anu Garg’s wordsmith.org A.W.A.D. service out there. I’ve signed up for every word-a-day list I’ve come across, and while they’re all useful for the budding writer or the linguaphile, none have held my interest nearly as much as Garg’s labor of love.
From their FAQ:
It began as an idea for displaying a word and its definition on his terminal when Anu Garg logged on every morning during his graduate studies. Later, he thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if other people could also receive this?” And a wordserver was born. (March 14, 1994)
Anyway, A.W.A.D. is the first list I signed up for 8 years ago, and it’s the only one I kept after also test-driving the cold and overly verbose OED list (which I would recommend for writers) as well as the almost-identical but impersonal dictionary.com mailing list.
Sign up for Anu Garg’s stellar A.W.A.D. mailing list now. You won’t regret it.
If you like the mailing list, also consider purchasing Garg’s three books:
- A Romp Through Some of the Most Unusual and Intriguing Words in English
- An All-New Romp Through Some of the Most Unusual and Intriguing Words in English
- The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two: The Hidden Lives and Strange Origins of Common and Not-So-Common Words
